My contribution so far
Last week, we concluded all our user interviews with Product managers and Excel customers. My internship project is to build a feature that enables users to open their Excel workbooks in the web application from the Desktop. During these interviews, we aimed at understanding how our feature will be helpful to Excel customers. First, we interviewed product managers because they are our first target audience. Most Excel products that involve collaboration and AI are always first shipped to the web version, iterated upon before they are shipped to other endpoints. Second, we interviewed excel customers since they will be the ones using the product, and we wanted to know if they have experienced a pain point of wanting to switch between Excel desktop and Excel web.
After those interviews with my teammates, I developed two user scenarios of personas who would use our project feature and the value proposition of when our feature is useful. Additionally, we used Figma to design prototype designs for the feature. I had never worked on creating the product's user interface with Figma before, but it was an easy and great skill to pick up. After writing up all these components, we compiled them into a product specification for our feature and invited ten Product managers to review our specification. After the review session, our project moved to the development cycle, where we will start writing code.
After four weeks of the internship, I contributed a product specification of an open web Excel feature for the Microsoft Excel team.
